Jacques Moitoret
Galley 63 Eleven is proud to present a rare solo exhibition titled "Madonnas and Madmen" by legendary Northwest artist Jacques Moitoret. In the gallery from Nov. 12 to Dec. 7, 2005 are a select group of portraits of the famous, the infamous, and the unfamous, painted in Moitorets' remarkable Old Master's style. Ranging from a luminescent Gothic Madonna to contemporary friends of the artist, the paintings evoke meditations on history as he juxtaposes faces of abiding fame with people who's notoriety has subsided to the realm of faded newspaper clippings and old postage stamps. Jesse James seems ready to shoot you, Wassily Kandinsky looks out to us from the moment he invented Abstract Painting, Jackson Pollock blows smoke in our face. Most impressive are Moitoret's mythic inventions, goddesses depicted in Baroque grandeur, a mermaid embraces a gigantic crustacean in "Rapture of the Deep". A blonde Indian madonna curtseys in a "velvet jungle night" in "White Dove", Moitoret's sublime allegory on America. Also on display are prints of a few of Moitoret's "greatest hits" along with prints of recent paintings never shown in galleries. Jacques Moitoret has been honing his prodigious skills for over thirty years. He has shown at every major institution in the area and his work is in public, corporate and private collections. Moitorets' combination of subtle artistic sensibility and consumate technique puts him in the forefront of Northwest artists and makes this a show not to be missed.
