Gallery 63 Eleven is proud to present in her first one woman show, local
artist Sara Porter. Porter, a painter and print artist has shown and sold
her work at Seattle's Pike Place Market for the past 25 years.

Artist Statement
I've had a lifelong fascination for cultural and natural diversity. I grew up in a family that encouraged me to explore the world. We traveled and lived abroad and I was exposed to many fascinating cultures and spectacular scenery. Early on I discovered that a sketch-pad was a great tool to study the details of the natural environment or people's faces and scenes of daily life, allowing me to look closely without seeming too inquisitive. It also gave the people I encountered the chance to relate to me as an artist at work and my sketches became a vehicle for easy connection.
Many of my paintings are intimate portraits that seek to illuminate the soul of the subject. I try to make accurate portrayals of traditional dress and the context in which my subject lives because I want to honor those who developed these rich cultures. Scenes of everyday life and connections of family and community are aspects of life I am drawn to depict. My hope is that by presenting my subjects with the respect and dignity they deserve, they won't appear to the viewer as exotic strangers but become people in whom we might recognize our family or ourselves.
Vibrant cultures are always tied to an environment that supports their existence and inspires the artistic life of the people. I feel the deep connection to place and paint nature where ever I find myself.
