"New Works"

October 13th to November 7th

Artists' reception, Saturday October 13th from 6 to 10:00pm

Gallery 63 Eleven welcomes in his first one man show with the gallery, a local artist who has been involved in the Ballard art scene working out of his studio in Building C.
Join us for the artists' reception, Saturday October 13th from 6 to 10pm, on the Ballard Artwalk.
My work is painted on stretched canvas or panel, and primed using acrylic gesso (for canvas) or oil ground with size) (on panels). I use tools and various mediums to manipulate the surface in the early stages of the painting. The final stages of the painting are always in oil. I use reference materials sparingly, but I think they can be useful way in the beginning of a piece. I tend to abandon references altogether by the time I reach the middle of the painting process, as formal elements are already decided. Despite a structured beginning, I like to stay loose enough in the painting process to make spontaneous changes.

I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in The Gambia, West Africa for over 2 years. This body of work is more about subtle personal sensations of life there than specific experiences. It was a sparse landscape, so the beauty existed in these subtleties. A perceptible change in barometric pressure with the coming of rain, a slight change in color in the horizon meant an emerging bushfire. They are a dialogue with Silence, heat, and the power of loneliness.
