Carving in Clay: New works in terra cotta and bronze by Joan Rudd

Seattle's Yiddish sculptor, Joan Rudd, exhibits new work in terra cotta and bronze. Opening reception for the artist will be 6-10 PM on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Show runs through February 6. An additional, daytime "Meet the artist" will be on January 26, from 11-5. Joan's small scale clothed figures (8-10") represent a range of human emotion, focusing perhaps on tenderness.

Joan's choice of titles and using the Yiddish language to express them is based on a growing admiration for the sayings of her "folk" heritage. The wry humor and boundless wisdom of Yiddish proverbs and songs is what sustains her both in her outlook on life and on her work.

"Carving into firm clay blocks is direct and fast. The limits of technique force me to find the large movements within the figure. The result is simple, clear, and as alive as I can make it."
