The Boone County 4-H fair in rural Indiana was where I 1st began displaying my artwork. As a kid, I entered photography & fine art exibits along with dairy and gardening. I never liked dairy or gardening. Leading a cow around in front of people seemed pointless. By the end of the week, all of the vegetables on display were shriveled by the Indiana heat, giving them a "science experiment" look. Photography & fine arts were my escape from the farm. When I got grand champion on my dairy cow, i quit & never showed another cow again. When I got grand champion for a painting I decided to go to art school for a couple of years.
Since moving to Seattle art has become a much bigger part of my life. My 1st show was a few years ago at Mr. Spot's Chai House in Ballard. Sometimes it's hard to believe that I'm going to have a show in a gallery. Preparing for it has been exciting & exhausting. Composition is what I've been focusing on. I believe each piece has individuality, but the composition of the entire show will rely on how they compliment each other on the wall. Humor is laced throughout & being TOO serious is avoided. Subject matter & composition have been thought over for hours on countless bus rides. I have ideas stockpiled for future shows and can't wait to hang them on a wall.
Art is still my escape, which makes me more thankful that I had to show dairy cows to people.
