Originally from Helsinki, Finland, Pirjo lives and works in Seattle. She has exhibited in Finland and locally at the Nordic Heritage Museum, as well as group exhibitions in both countries. Pirjo works in, and shows with the artists of Building C, in Ballard.
Color, texture, and shape are core of my current paintings. The lines, repetition, texture, and geometric forms that are the textiles at home inspire my paintings. I am interested in space, time, and rhythm. My paintings reflect the common experience of a day; the basic structure is predictable and repeats itself, however, everyday is different. Similarly, my paintings follow the same structure, yet, they all become unique.
Being abstract in nature, my paintings typically raise emotions and feelings originating from the observer. They are tactile and they beckon you to touch them. They take you to another world, the world of paint. These paintings are plain and simple: color, contrasts, and lines. They are easy to relate to but still they remain mysterious and intriguing. These are the rhythms of the little worlds, your own experiences, and your own space.
In my mixed media work, I combine painting, monoprinting and collage to create compositions that are built on repetition. I enjoy exploring the contrasts between the collage and painted surfaces, and how the space becomes the surface and the surface becomes a space. The ritual of collecting and cutting the variety of materials is important part in my work process. I transform the shapes of the materials by cutting them into stripes and lines, and then rearrange and organize them.
